Electron beam irradiation crosslinking of UHMWPE: a new era for artificial joints

With the development of the economy and the improvement of social security levels, the phenomenon of aging has also intensified. The joint wear and tear of elderly people, coupled with various accidents and incidents, has led to an increasing number of joint injuries year by year.

Artificial total joint replacement is currently the best treatment option for severe joint injuries and joint necrosis in clinical practice, mainly including total hip replacement and total knee replacement.

UHMWPE is an early polymer material used for the preparation of artificial joints. Currently, the technology for preparation and use is relatively mature, but some specific defects still need further improvement.

Compared to chemical crosslinking, the advantages of electron beam irradiation crosslinking UHMWPE are:

① Radiation crosslinking can be completed at room temperature and atmospheric pressure.

② Controlling the absorbed dose can control the crosslinking degree and make it easy to reproduce.

③ The product is pure and produces no waste.

④ The production efficiency is higher than that of chemical methods.
